About Denise: Denise Barclay is an anointed vocalist, pianist, arranger, and producer. She has been involved in music since her teen years. Her diverse style features the contemplative to the soulful. As an independent artist, Denise developed her own record label, Watergirl Music, and is grateful for the opportunities God has afforded her ministry.
When did you first start singing & playing?
I started singing and playing in church around age 10.
What gospel artist inspired you the most growing up and who inspires you now?
I grew up listening to the Crouch, and Hawkins families. I also enjoyed the Heritage singers. I am inspired by the music of CeCe Winans, Nicole C.Mullen, Martha Munizzi, and Nathelene Moore.
What are some of the advantages of being an independent artist?
Being an Independent Artist frees me from having to conform to worldly images for the purpose of advertising and sales. It also allows me creative freedom with song selection and production.
Do you get nervous before you minister?
Yes - always nervous! It reminds me of how dependent I am on God for my success.
How long have you been an independent artist?
I've been an indpendent artist since the year 2000.
What Christian artist would you most like to sing a duet with?
The Christian Artist I dreamed of singing a duet with was Chris Willis, and God blessed me with that awesome opportunity. The song "Yes," on the album 'Restored,' is a conversation between me and God the Father. Chris sings the part of God (reassuring me of His never ending love), in response to my questions and concerns about past failed relationships. Initially, people assume the song is just another "wedding/love song," until they are able to understand the lyrics, as the song progresses.
Where do you see Christian music headed in the years to come?
I believe that certain aspects of the business of Christian music compromise the true value of the lyric/melody formula. Often the music sounds so much like the world, that the lyrics get lost. Also, the media packaging of cds - to include videos, promo shots, and dvds serve as a distraction from what the real goal of Christian music should be - to glorify God. If consumers are being entertained - only, and not drawn closer to Christ, Artists are just creating a fan base and not promoting the business of making "God look good." We have an awesome responsibility in music ministry - to include being responsible with the gifts He has given us.
